Monday 6th June 2022

A changeable start to the week – improving later in the week and for the weekend.

Thanks to Chris for the photograph.

Tonight will be fairly cloudy, though some clear spells at times, down to around 9’C or so.

Tuesday looks fairly variable, with some sunny spells at times, but some more general cloudyish spells – some light showers possible in the possible, a few scattered heavier showers in the afternoon – but some places will stay dry. Warm, around 21’C. Cloud thickening from the south-west into the evening, with some showery rain overnight for a time. No lower than 14’C

Wednesday sees sunny spells and scattered heavy showers. Some places may avoid them, but more likely you’ll get a couple during the course of the day. Warm, around 21’C again. Fairly clear skies overnight, down to around 12’C.

Thursday should be warm with sunny spells and fair weather cloud – probably a bit more cloud than sun for a time in the early afternoon, but overall pretty decent. Around 22’C. Cloud thickening from the west overnight, a bit of patchy lightish rain at times later in the night. Around 14’C.

Friday probably starts cloudy with a bit of light rain – but uncertain how quickly the overnight weather front clears. Once this clears, sunny spells follow with the odd shower dotted around, though nothing too much. Warm, 22’C, maybe a tad more. Clear skies overnight, down to around 10’C.

Saturday looks warm with some reasonable amounts of sunshine. Uncertain over how much cloud will bubble up at this stage, but warm, dry and at least some sunshine. Around 22’C, or a tad more.

Sunday broadly looks similar to Saturday.

Not as much effort has gone into this forecast as usual – bit lacking in energy and motivation today. But there’s less uncertainty this week so it should broadly play out fine.

I still haven’t done my summer forecast – I concentrated too much on the Jubilee bank holiday weather so not really had time to finish research, let alone writing it. Will try to do it this week.…

Saturday 4th June 2022 – Mini Update

I’m not sure I need to do much of an update, as I seem to have got this tricky forecast spot on so far. However it remains a tricky forecast with some uncertainty on details.

We start with bits and pieces of rain – leftovers from yesterday’s thunderstorms in France, I believe. The sun should come out…will come out from around late morning onwards. There is some uncertainty on cloud, but most likely the cloud will break up to leave good spells of sunshine – though hazy at times, especially later in the afternoon.

I cannot totally rule out a shower popping up this afternoon, but it is a very small chance. We should reach around 20’C, but the easterly breeze will just take the edge off.

The evening sees an area of thundery showers move up from France. As always in such situations, different areas will have different experiences – some places will just get some heavy rain, some places will get some torrential downpours, some places will get some thunder/lightning – some places may get a proper thunderstorm.

So it will be a watch the radar and lightning detector kind of evening.

It’s possible they will arrive any time from 6pm, though more likely around 9/10pm – the latest they could arrive is around midnight/1am.

As I mentioned, some areas will see some torrential rain and localised flooding will be possible – likewise, there could be frequent lightning for some areas too. But impossible at this stage to know where. I’d suggest a risk of around 15% for a proper thunderstorm, 25% for some thunder, 40% chance of torrential rain – and almost certainly some heavy rain.

Most likely for Sunday, we’ll see a lot of cloud left over. Perhaps still some rain first thing, but most likely it will have already cleared north. Later in the day, some sunshine is possible, but if the sun comes out, heavy, thundery showers will quickly develop. Around 18’C.…

Thursday 2nd June 2022

Well, I’ve been putting off this forecast all day thinking “one more set of model runs” will help. I’m just about there in terms of knowing when it should rain, though there remains uncertainty. Yeah, there is rain on the way.

It’s a fairly complex convective situation, with the low pressure that was to the west of Spain/Portugal, that I’ve mentioned in the previous forecasts, getting close to the south of the UK, and it will bring heavy rain and/or heavy showers – possibly thunderstorms – later in the weekend.

Until then, not too shabby.

Thanks to Chris for the photograph.

This evening stays bright with some high/mid level cloud. Some cloud remaining overnight but fairly clear, down to around 9’C.

Friday starts reasonably sunny. There will be sunny spells throughout the day but also a fair amount of mid-level cloud. A very small chance of an afternoon shower, but they should remain to our west. Warm, 22’C or so. Cloud tending to increase overnight – a small (though fairly uncertain) chance of a shower later in the night, down to around 11’C.

Saturday sees high pressure over the north of the UK – with the convective low over France.

Saturday is uncertain! There will likely be hazy sunshine quite often during the day – there is a chance of a band of showers spreading north in the morning, though I’m suspecting that they’ll fade before they get here. The afternoon only has a low chance of showers, and there should be more in the way of sunshine. Warm, around 20’C – give or take. During the evening or more likely overnight, some heavy, showery rain, possibly torrential, possibly with thunderstorms, will move up from the south. Details are uncertain at this stage, and probably will be until Saturday itself.

Sunday may start with thundery downpours – or they may have already moved north. Either way, they will move north. We’ll likely be left with a lot of cloud, but it’s possible that the sun may come out by late afternoon. 16’C if it stays cloudy, 20’C with some late afternoon sunshine. However – any sunshine could easily trigger some more heavy showers.

I stress again the uncertain for both Saturday and Sunday – details could turn out quite different from the more likely outcome above – but at some point, there will be heavy rain or heavy showers, be it day or night.

Monday looks fairly cloudy with some showers.

Tuesday should see things start to improve. Still a few showers around but more in the way of sunny spells, and temperatures on the up, say 21’C or so.

Wednesday starts sunny, but will become increasingly hazy as a weather front tries to push in from the west – some patchy rain possible late in the day or into the evening, though amounts limited. Warm, around 21’C.

Thursday is about as far as I can go with any reasonable level of confidence, and even then I’m not convinced, but the more likely outcome is sunny spells and only a small chance of a shower. Likely warm or very warm.

From there, probably quite variable conditions – some dry, sunny days, some wet or showery days – often warmer than normal.

You might get updates on Saturday/Sunday morning, especially if anything is notably different from above…I’m on call with work so it isn’t like I’ve got too much of a social life this weekend!

Enjoy the bank holiday and celebrations.…
